In paper & pulp industry : Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry for coating paper, for pitch control, and as a filler. It helps in controlling pitch and stickies which clog machines and impact runnability. Special properties of talc help in improving quality and productivity of paper.
In plastics industry : Talc is used as a reinforcing filler in polypropylene and engineering thermoplastics for automobile parts, household appliances, electrical & electronics components, and food packaging. It is also used for antiblocking in polyethylene as it restores mechanical properties to recycled plastics. Its other applications areas include biopolymers, semi-crystalline polymers, and wood plastic composites.
In agriculture industries : Talc finds its application in the agricultural industry in fertilizers, animal feeds, feed premixes, agricultural chemicals. Talc acts as a coating agent, prevents caking, improves fertilizer flow, and reduces water pick-up and dust for fertilizers. In addition, talc is used as an anticaking agent, dispersing agent, and die lubricant in the production of animal feed. Further, talc can be an excellent alternative to chemicals for the UV protection of fruits as it is environmental friendly. It also finds application in olive oil production and seed coating.
In ceramic industry : Talc has infinite use in the ceramic industry. It is used in automotive cordierite ceramics, electroceramics, floor tiles, sanitaryware, cordierite - mullite refractories, tableware. It helps in improving the mechanical and optical properties of tiles. In addition, cordierites formed by chlorite-rich talc have high thermal shock resistance.
In food industry : Talc finds variety of use in the food industry. It is used as for texturizing and surface finishing, and as a processing aid. In addition, it can also be used as an anticaking agent, coating agent, and a filler and carrier in different food products. Due to its anti-stick property talc is an excellent coating agent for confectionary, cured meats and dried food products. In chewing gums talc is used as a filler and gum base regulator.
In paints and coating industry : Talc is used in all kinds of paints from decorative paints to inks. It is used as a pigment, filler and extender in paints. It helps in improving the mechanical and optical properties of paints. It is also used in putties and floor mortar.
In pharmaceutical industry : Talc is used as an excipient for tablets and carrier for medicated powders. It is an excellent anti-tack agent, and therefore it ensures flawless products. In addition, for targeted delivery of drugs it is used in enteric coatings.
In rubber industry : Due to the inert nature and other properties of talc, it is extensively used in the rubber industry for improving processing, weathering, fire resistance, and mechanical properties such as tear. It is used in tires, industrial mechanical goods, wires and cables, and pharmaceutical closures.
In cosmetic industry : Fine talc is used as a base for powder and rouge. Talc mattes the skin in cosmetics. It has an antibacterial effect and its pure form does not have any allergenic substance in it.
